How to Maintain your Pool During the Cooler Months

The following is general advice only. Requirements for individual pools and pool systems may vary.

When winter rolls around and your pool’s water temperature inherently drops, you will probably find your pool being used less and less.

So, how do you maintain your pool when it is not in use to ensure it’s ready and roaring to go when the time is right?

We have developed a simple list of things you can do to ensure your pool stays healthy and well-maintained all year round:

Firstly, if you have a pool cover, winter is an opportune time to use it. This will prevent or reduce the likelihood of debris entering the pool and affecting the water’s chemistry or the pool’s structural integrity.

We recommend you regularly remove debris from your pool cover to ensure its longevity.

Secondly, during winter, it is also necessary to balance your pool water’s chemistry. It may also be necessary to add an algaecide and/or shock to prevent algae growth. Proper and continued water maintenance will help prevent nasty surprises when the time comes to jump back in.

Thirdly, check on your pool equipment regularly to ensure it is running smoothly and properly. Periodic maintenance may be required, and sometimes equipment may need replacing. Having your finger on the pulse can prevent further issues that might occur if maintenance issues are not attended to in a timely way.

Fourthly, monitor your pool’s water level and if required, adjust it.

Finally, continue to clean your pool water and remove unwanted debris all year round to ensure clear, healthy water, regardless of whether the pool is being used or not.

These simple steps will help ensure your pool water remains healthy, your pool equipment remains well looked after, and your pool is ready to go when the temperature is right.
