What is Acid Washing and Why is it Important

The following is general advice only. Requirements for individual pools and pool systems may vary.

What is acid washing?

Simply put, acid washing a pool involves emptying the pool, cleaning the pool and acid washing the surface, refilling the pool, and rebalancing the pool.

During the cleaning process, chemicals—mainly hydrochloric acid—are combined with water and are sprayed onto your pool’s surface to remove grime, algae, and staining that has built up over time. A professional pool technician will scrub out the staining and other grime. Acid washing can significantly improve your pool’s aesthetics making for a more inviting and swim in healthier water.

Because of the harshness of some of the chemicals involved in this process, engaging a specialist with the expertise to undertake this process is highly recommended and the safer option compared to a DIY solution.

What Type of Algae and Stains Will Acid Washing Remove?

Acid washes can effectively remove magnesium stains, copper stains, hard water stains, and remove and prevent algae growth.

How Often Should you Acid Wash Your Pool

If you regularly clean and maintain your pool, you will only need to acid wash it occasionally, approximately every five to seven years.

As a general rule, we do not recommended acid washing more frequently as the overuse of the harsh chemicals used can damage your pool’s surface.

Why Engage a Professional

As mentioned above, pool acid washing requires the use of harsh chemicals and when not done correctly, can cause:

  • Chemical burns on the skin if protective gear is not worn

  • Lung damage if the chemicals are breathed into the body

  • Discoloration on your pool’s surface

  • Damage on your pool’s surface

We therefore highly recommend the use of trained professional pool technicians to undertake this work.
